I know we don't usually post game reviews here on the news section but I wanted to make an exception for this game. If you keep up with video game rankings you will know that this game has been receiving very good reviews and at one point was even ahead of Ocarina of Time as the best game of all time. It has since slipped to number 2 but none the less this is a very impressive feat.

I had a chance to pick up the game and try it out for myself, here is what I thought of it.

Gameplay

The game plays eerily similar to Super Mario 64, a game which defined the 3d platforming genre. When I first started playing I felt like they took the N64 controls from SM64 and put them onto the Wii. I already knew exactly how to do all the different jumping moves that Mario could do because the controls were so similar.

Even the way you go through the levels is very similar to SM64. Just like with SM64 where you travelled throughout the castle jumping through paintings, in this game you travel to different galaxies. In SM64 each level has multiple stars that you need to collect by doing different tasks. In Galaxy each level has multiple stars that you need to collect by doing different tasks.

The style of this game is unique as well and even a bit disorienting at first. Imagine you are running around a globe, except you run along the sides, along the bottom, anywhere. You need to get used to this type of control very quickly in order to get through this game.

Graphics

The graphics are very solid for a Wii game. It is everything you want from a Mario game. There is nothing realistic about it, it's your standard cartoon style that you expect from a Mario game.

Music

I really enjoy the music in this game. I think part of that is because they borrow the same tunes from other Mario games and enhance them to make them more modern.

Overall

I would have to agree with all the other game reviewers out there in giving this a huge ranking. It is definitely worthy of 5/5 stars, it is an extremely fun game to play and it will not disappoint you.

Is it worth being listed as the greatest game of all time? I don't think I'm qualified to make that call but it definitely deserves to be listed among the greats.

What do you think of this game? Would you call it the greatest game of all time? Or did you have a totally different experience with this game. Let me know in the comments, I hope you enjoyed reading my review of Super Mario Galaxy.
