Forgotten Gems

I'm gonna go ahead and list some of my favorite games that few people have played. By all means post more, but please include a description so it at least inspires some more people to play it.

GunValkyrie (Xbox)
It's got one of the most inventive control schemes I've ever used and is sorely underappreciated. You control the rather hot tight-suit-wearing Kelly and her jetpack, which is operated by moving the control stick and clicking it in in order to boost in that direction. It's an incredibly unique way to control a game, and requires a lot of practise, but damn if it isn't fun. The game's got some great art and music too.

Beyond Good & Evil (Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, PC)
TFrom the creator of Rayman 2, Michael Ancel. The fact that this game sold so poorly is just devastating. Not only does it have some amazing graphics/art/music, it's got a wide variety of gameplay that actually works well together and the whole thing flows like a sea. (Unlike another Zelda game that came out last year). You've got photography and hovercraft riding and realtime combat and exploration and SO much more, and the best part is that it's all entangled in such a touching sweet story that you can't help but play the whole thing right to the end. Short for an adventure - about 13 hours - but DAMN sweet. It's only flaw is that it isn't more epic.

Tales of Eternia (PSX)
Released in the U.S. as Tales of Destiny II, and somewhat hard to find, but totally worth every penny you spend on it. It's a lonvingly hand-drawn 2D RPG with some of the most amazing art I have ever layed my eyes on. The story is slightly cliche but never fails to be interesting; the pacing is perfect also. The characters are so cool that you can't help but love them, and the world itself is actually extremely interesting (something you can't often say about a game). The most intriguing part is the battle system. Each battle plays out just like an 2D-RPG-fighting game would, if you can imagine that. You can control one character in your party while the others hang back and function according to their instructions, casting magic, using items, or attacking, while you have the option to deal out whatever spells you want and even use a number of configurable combos. It's a great deal of fun and makes Final Fantasy piss its fucking pants. It rocks.

I'll add more.

Lamp speaks the truth. Anyway, some more.

Mars Matrix (Dreamcast)
Definitely one of the trickier-to-find-but-still-possible-to Dreamcast games out there. I think I own one of only several thousand copies available - but damn, it is a good game. It's an overhead vertical shooter from Capcom, with some wicked cool touches. It plays like your basic fast-paced shooter with cool weapons, including an upgradable missle/laser, a powerful short range "hammer", and the kickass Gravity Bomb; you hold in a button to suck in all of the bullets onscreen and you may either release a small amount to help you in the short time, or charge up and release a huge blast that hits everything on screen. The strategy comes when you realize that a full-blown Gravity Bomb takes a long time to "de-charge" before you can use the ability again, whereas smaller bursts allow for more frequency. Add to this an awesome experience point system: enemies drop cubes every time they're blasted, and the more you pick up in succession the better the multiplier will be. These points can be used in the game's store, letting you buy continues, ship upgrades, bonus levels, and even videos of pros showing the best way to complete each level. There's an insane amount of depth in this game.

Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)
From Smilebit at Sega who also brought us GunValkyrie and the Jet series comes what is possibly the Xbox's most visually stunning game. It - like Mars Matrix - is a shooter on rails, but this game is in 3D and takes much advantage from Xbox capabilities. Your vehicle is a dragon, and with the snap of a button it can transform into any of three different dragons: one light and quick but weak, one intermediate, and another heavy but powerful dragon. Depending on how much you use them and how well, they will gain experience, so it is best to balance your playtime with each. but it's up to you. Sometimes you will face dozens upon dozens of enemies at a time...sometimes you will face a complex boss that requires your full attention. The game is pretty tough, but it is oh-so-worth it if only to witness the confusing-but-cool storyline, great music, and marvelous graphics. The art in this game is like no other.

Old topic. But, gots to reply...

Castlevania: SOTN: I'll welded the disc to my PSone.

Banjo-Kazooie: Kiddy, yes. It's a modern classic though (gba updates don't count).

The Punchout Series: Crying for an update and from some broken noses too.

Chrono Trigger: Not forgotten, it just needs a worthy update.

Perfect Dark: This needs an update now. Does Rare feel a little inadequate to Bungie's almost perfect shooter?

Starfox64: Excuse me, but piloting a fox isn't the same as piloting an arwing.

Bombliss: Yea, I'll still emulate it on the gb regularly...

Parapppa the Rappa (original): Re-release...Come on.

I got lots more (but, I'm just adjusting to typing so much again :P ).

ive got a few to add then

Hiyake No Omoide - Girls In Motion Puzzle Vol 1 (J) [Sega Saturn]
a simple puzzle game, kinda like the standard table-top XXX piece type, with videos instead of just 1 picture.

Sakura Taisen - Columns (J) [or hanagumi taisen][Sega Saturn]
vs collums with good sounds and art.

Sweet Home (J) [NES/Famicom]
rpg with no inns or shops. your team must travel through a haunted mansion, to get out, you must solve the puzzle and figure out what the hell happened.

more coming soon

Shops in games always pissed me off. Is it not reasonable to believe that the first shop in the game could carry the strongest weapons as well? Kind of like a shipment from the other shop or something? hehe.

Privateer - DOS
One of my favorite games
A good old space flight game where you could do the main story if you wanted, or go off on your own to upgrade your ship before you got there. Very addicting.

a couple more of mine faves

Cyber Speedway (U)(E)/Gran Chaser (J) [Saturn]
In the distant future, wars are replaced with races, where the driver of the winning cyber sled, becomes/can become the ruler of the galaxy. first racing game i know of that uses rockets.

Wipeout + Wipeout 2097 (E)/Wipeout XL (J) [Saturn, possibly PSX too]
Not sure of the story, but its basically the same as cyber speedway.

Hexen [Saturn, PSX, N64, PC]
Play as 1 of 3 heroes who have vowed to destroy their evil rulers. similar to doom.

Skippies Revenge [PC]
Play as a handicapped kid who has a wheelchair modified with lawn mower blades. very demented, good luck finding it since the main portian of the site is down, and has been for some time...

btw, i do like beyond good and evil, i just love the game, and the main character too, MEOW, my kinda chic

:P Um,

Maniac Mansion: Sorry. I loved this game its puzzle/point and click nature sucked me in. I didn't have the guts to steal it from the Circle K and well several years later I downloaded it for free (and nobody called my house asking if I'd return it).

Nights: I thought the game was gay till I hungered for the 3D graphics that my short lived Saturn provided and my SNES had wet dreams about (in Mode 7 of course).

Ridge Racer (original to Type 4): I still got butt bite marks in that chair that I threw away a long time ago from trying to make the turns perfectly (the chair?...I visit it often at the local landfill).

Shadowgate: I think this game has so much magic involved with the original that no update (even with an N64 or super hyper [system of your choice] update) could do it justice.

Goldeneye: A Rare update to that game would of been legendary (loan me your alternate dimension machine and I'll travel there, sell it for the game, some beer, live out my life and die there).

Wizardry 5: I ate, slept and...played that game.

The Amethyst: Didn't people forget about that gem... :P

They are making a Goldeneye 2 (i don;t remember tha developer), but it's basically just as all the other new bond games with the goldeneye name on it. have you played the newest bonds? they're actually quite good. anyway -

The Lost Vikings 2: An old snes games made by none other than blizzard. very innovative and fun with strategic actiony/puzzley levels.

Who's making the title? The additions to Perfect Dark was fun its just that I think if they still had the licence at the time they would of made a killer game mixing the films actors/locations/scenarios/wepons/gadgets for their single player mode and movie specific maps and characters (the 5 bonds and his enemys/allies) for the mulitplayer. All the alien shit in PD (besides the weapons) was a little gay.

The vehicle modes in the newer Bond games just aren't fun in my opinion. I know the films weren't run and gun like a FPS and it needs the 3rd person, driving, flying, swimming and maybe even some picking which sexy Bond girl you'd like to be your partner in a mission. I just think the as a FPS it was fun and executed a lot better then the vehicle stuff.

Marble Madness: The arcade version with the original track ball was great and really exspensive.

Slaughterhouse/Splatterhouse: In the future I hope it gets a better life as an evil vs. evil survival horror game (without the Resident Evil controls and camera angles).

Kid Icarus: I emulated it recently and it sucked (but was a favorite in my youth). Maybe Nintendo can update it with a Zelda-style Greek mythology blow out in the future.

Starcraft: How many Warcraft updates were there compared to Starcraft updates? The poor blood-thirsty Zergs got forgot about.

Philistine! Maniac Mansion bored you to death?

yes it did, but i got so many games its nutzzzzzzzzzzz

Sub Terania [Genesis/Mega Drive] 360 degree shooter, must rescue humans to get ship upgrades and kill the aliens that invaded the mining colony.

Solor Jetman [NES] similar to sub terania, but you must collect salvage from many planets in order to upgrade your little exploration pod and find a fiend who stole and broke the top secret ship and tried to sell it. each planet has its own gravity setting [sometimes negative gravity] and when youve got something in tow, your pod is harder to manuver. easy to learn, difficult to master :)

I know that feeling about Nights. It was the game that made me want an so saturn badly.

The Settlers 2: Gold Edition: This game, althought boring at times. Is some how so freaking addicting. I still find my self playing it.

FallOut 2: Always wanted to know what it maybe like to be an junkie, hooked on jet? Ever dream about being the bringer of death? Get turned on by the idea of you're charature having sex? Then I suggest this game for you. You get to do close to everything.

Starsiege:Tribes: Yep. I love this game. It one of the first online fps I have ever played. And it was damn good. I played 12 hours none stop when I first bought this little gem, along with StarSiege in an clearance sell at the only pure video game store that my city has ever had. It a crying shame, the community had to ruin Tribes 2.
