Last week, someone here in the Netherlands was shot, cut and left dead with a note containing islamic quotes, just because he spoke out. His name was Theo van Gogh. He was buried today.

Why? Because he made a movie about the lack of female rights in the islam. The hurt, the shame, the utter lack of respect for fellow human beings.

We all believe in freedom of speech, but when you do, you can be killed, locked up, or be otherwise infringed upon you basic rights. So what are we talking about? There is no freedom of speech, just freedom of thought!

Sad to see people being hurt in any way, just because they speak in stead of think. I thought America would take their bill of rights very serious, but this kind of thing makes it just words on paper. Not an ideologie.

yeah i heard about that van gogh guy, what i dont understand is the logic behind people who commit those kind of crimes. I mean doing it just brings the issue to the forefront and usually promotes more action. If No one had touched van gogh, probably no one would even know his movie existed.

what i find troubling is the retaliation on the churches after because a fundamentalist killed van gogh. I never understood how the vengence aspect of attacking innocents not related to the initial crime justifies anything.

You're very right about that! I never heard about it, until this happened. Now it's all over the media and box-office turn-outs are going up bigtime.

About the retalliation factor: There was a procession organised for all people who want to protest against this sort of action against anyone and to show support for the family of Theo van Gogh.

A lot of muslims attended and thus separated themselves from this mad-man who killed him. Theo never had any protection, even after his life was threatened because of this movie. There was not enough man-power to give him any protection.

Now a lot of islamic churches want protection by the state, just because one stupid dweep has committed murder.

i see what you're saying, to me, its just a sad state of affairs that the world seems to be bearing down into this end all relgious war of islam and the middle east vs western christian world. and people like bush and fundamentalists promte this type of behaviour through their action, scaring most citizens to a degree that they form a noticible or subtle prejudice toward those they feel are dangerous
