i just had a freind download me some roms i was wondering how can i get the cheat codes to work sense i dont know about the way the codes are made????

If you have N64 roms and use PJ64, I know that it has an entire premade list for all games! Just press ctrl+c in windowed mode.
About other emulators, you insert the cheat code (watch if it's game genie or Pro Action Replay) in a window called "cheats". Duh.
