ripping ROMS from N64 cartridges

As the title states, I want to get ROMs from my N64 cartridges. I realize that this might by a newbie topic, but I've searched all over the place, and nobody seems to talk about it much, so this is all that's left to do. I have an N64, and a bunch of games I want to rip onto my PC so I can play them with the emulator I use (Project 64). The only thing is I don't want to spend money on an adapter, I want to learn how to do it myself. I also realize that ROMs are available for download of a good amount of my games, but again, I want to learn how to do this myself. I am willing to take apart my N64 and strip some wires and such, but I don't have much experience in modifying hardware to this extent, so I would need some good instructions. Also: my brother probably has most of the stuff "toolwise" that I'll need, because he's one of those people who work with tools a lot, and he could help me out with stuff like soldering, wire stripping, or whatever needs to be done.

So if anybody knows how to do this, or knows of some tutorial that I wasn't able to find, please help me out, I will appreciate it a lot.

If Miyamoto or the N64 designers were here and willing to give you schematics then you'd be in luck. Sadly, the downloading and ripping of games are the more viable option.

I don't want ruin your dream, but if this technology was as simple as stripping wires, and soldering then we'd have no need for an emulator. At the time, you got to buy the game and play it in the system, or emulate a ripped rom on an emulator that roughly runs 20% of N64 roms well or acceptable.

But all I want to do is to rip a ROM. I'm not talking about something new or something nobody has done before -- I'm just talking about getting the ROM from my own cartridge instead of downloading them from other people who have got them from their own cartridges.

I found this at Lik-Sang...apparently it's a male/male printer cord that connects to a standard parallel port. Looks like it also connects to the bottom of the N64 and/or the port where you insert the game. Does this mean that a standard m/f printer cord will connect to the game itself? Once I get my m/f cord from my dad's house I'm gonna try this out...I'll let you know.

As far as I knew you needed to buy seperate hardware to do this.

aye ur right. with the NES you had to build some connector and it was pretty tricky.

I was under the assumption that you were willing to strip wires on a N64 to rip roms.

You should rip roms with something that people has done before. Seriously, some tools are better then your brothers all in one soldering/wire stripping/all around tool.
