Windows' control isn't that bad, and if you have that much RAM you really should be running XP.

yeah i've heard that alot, but i've waited this long, and beta tests for the new OS are in May, so i can wait that long for an OS upgrade

Some people like to static half their RAM.

In example, you have 1024MB of RAM. So you set both the minimum and maximum at 512.

I hear it works pretty good, though Lamp could probably tell you more than I. I could be wrong. Just what I hear though.

Lamp? Seriously i think Ziptal knows a lot more than Lamp knows. From what i've gathered his 1 sentense posts really don't have much content and if you look closely, don't really say much. I mean no sh*t, if you have 512 MB RAM or more of course you use Windows XP, even i know that.

You really can gather that much in just one day of looking around the forum? Wow...

Seriously. Stop acting like some elitest asshole.

I can agree w/you on the 512MB thing though... I'd never be using 512 let alone 1024 on this Win98SE machine of mine... crap, I know.

Yes you'd be underutilising the RAM, and Windows '98, either versions was never desigened to use more than 256 MB of RAM. Anymore than that will only be minimal difference. Of course having 1024 MB is going to still be significant. But not as significant as with XP. It's not exactly my speciality so i can't say that i'm too sure.

I know that i may only be judging on 10 - 20 of The Lamperus posts, but those are the only ones i've seen and it seems that he isn't that much help to anyone. And is making a lot of things up. And i believe you should only talk when you know what your talking about, not when you don't. As people expect that you do know what your talking about.

You don't want people to go off thinking they know about something but being told the wrong information. WE couldn't have that now, could we?

I understand. I'm just saying you kinda come off a little egotistical, whether or not you mean to. Just what I see.

The fact that you didn't come back w/some sort of immature comeback immediately after my posting does help your case in my book though.

Lamp does have some good info to give though. But no one's correct 100% of the time.

Either way, back on topic.

*chuckles* I make things up, do I?

Back to the topic then eh?

A common way to have your virtual memory set up is to give it 1.5x the actual ammount of RAM you've got. At 612mb, you're not going to want to do that, because having a swap of over 512mb in 98 of ME can cause some pretty serious issues with the memory handling. I'd say if you MUST set your virtual memory, open up your system.ini, find the "[vcache]" line (make one if there isn't one), and just under it, set the ammount with MaxFileCache=524288. Again, seriously, the Windows Virtual Memory managing is perfectly efficient on its own unless you hit over 1GB, and if you did that on Windows 98 or ME, you'd hit stability problems anyway.

Another thing people with over 256mb on an ME system tend to do is set the ConservativeSwapfileUsage to one.

meaning:

System.ini -
[386Enh]
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

People swear by that for games.

Experiment for a while, see what works best for your computer, and try to ignore the random insults being thrown around.

okkkk well that makes things more confusing since i just figured it would be as simple as entering numbers into the virtual memory tab, but i guess i'm make due, thanks dudes.

:P Don't worry about it; that works too. It's up to you how you do it. Pretty much no matter what you do you should be fine though.
